Furniture assembly questions, answered plainly

What is furniture assembly?

Putting a furniture item together from its components according to its design and instructions — fitting panels, hardware, doors, drawers and shelves, then aligning and checking it.

Can you assemble flat-pack furniture?

Yes. Flat-pack furniture can be assembled when the item, its components, the instructions and the site conditions are suitable.

Can furniture be disassembled and reassembled?

Often, yes — but it depends on the furniture's design, its condition, the hardware and how it was put together the first time.

What affects furniture assembly cost?

The type and size of the furniture, how many items and components, complexity, access, reassembly, missing parts and extras such as wall anchoring.

Should large wardrobes be secured?

Some tall or tip-prone furniture is designed to be secured for stability. The right method depends on the manufacturer's instructions and the wall.

Do you also move furniture?

Yes. We can disassemble furniture, move it and reassemble it at the new location — tell us both addresses when you book.

What furniture do you need assembled?

Which one?

Bedroom

Bed

Beds involve a frame, slats or base and sometimes storage drawers or a lift mechanism. Assembling in the room avoids carrying a finished frame through doors.

How complex is your furniture?

Examples

  • Desk
  • Dresser
  • TV unit
  • Multi-shelf cabinet

More components, drawers or doors to align, and sometimes a heavier final placement.

What really decides complexity

  • Number of components
  • Instructions
  • Hardware
  • Alignment
  • Size
  • Room and access
  • Missing or damaged parts
  • Wall anchoring

We don’t promise a fixed time from the category alone.

How a flat-pack wardrobe comes together

Assembly stage 1 of 5: Box

Box

Check every box is present, the model is right and nothing is visibly damaged.

  • Box count

Flat-pack furniture assembly

Small pieces are manageable on your own. Large wardrobes, multi-section units and anything with many doors and drawers are where an experienced pair of hands saves time and avoids misaligned doors, stripped holes and wobbly frames.

Before starting furniture assembly

  • Confirm it's the correct model
  • Keep the instructions to hand
  • Check all boxes are there
  • Look for visible damage
  • Keep hardware together
  • Clear enough floor space
  • Decide the final location
  • Check access to the room
  • Note whether wall anchoring is mentioned
  • Keep children and pets away from the work area

What if parts or hardware are missing?

  • A missing screw or dowel
  • A missing bracket
  • Incorrect hardware supplied
  • A damaged panel
  • A wrong component
  • Missing instructions
  • Parts still in another box

Assembly may need to pause if a required or safety-critical part is missing. We won’t improvise structural hardware or swap manufacturer-specific fittings for random alternatives — we’ll help you identify exactly what to request from the seller.

What if a furniture part arrives damaged?

  • Photograph the damage
  • Keep the packaging where practical
  • Identify the affected part
  • Check the seller's or manufacturer's replacement process
  • Don't force a damaged part into place
  • Assembly may need to wait for the replacement

Assembly doesn’t automatically include repair, but we do repair furniture — if a minor fix is suitable, we’ll quote it separately.

Does the furniture need to be secured to the wall?

Tall, narrow furniture has a higher centre of gravity, so it can tip more easily — especially when drawers are open or it’s climbed on. Many tall pieces are designed to be secured to the wall and come with a restraint for it. Not every piece needs anchoring.

  • Tall wardrobes
  • Bookcases
  • Tall cabinets
  • Shelving
  • Storage units
  • Chests of drawers
  • Shoe cabinets

We secure furniture to the wall where it’s needed. The right fixing depends on the wall construction (block, concrete or gypsum), the furniture design, the manufacturer’s instructions, the hardware and the final position — so we check before drilling, and avoid hidden pipes and cables.

Where will the furniture go?

Bedroom

Decide where the bed and wardrobe go before assembly — moving a fully assembled wardrobe or bed is much harder than positioning components first.

Think about final placement before assembly

  • Clearance from the wall
  • Door swing
  • Drawer and door opening space
  • Walkways
  • Sockets and switches
  • Windows and curtains
  • Room layout
  • Future access
  • Cleaning access

Follow any clearances the manufacturer specifies.

Will it fit where you want it?

Furniture size
Access route (pick any)

Choose a size and access route to see what to check.

Assembly covers putting the furniture together where it will stand. Carrying very heavy items through difficult access, or moving between homes, is quoted as moving work.

Need furniture reassembled after moving?

New assembly

The furniture is assembled for the first time from its packaged components, with new hardware and instructions.

Reassembly

Existing furniture is taken apart and put back together. How well that works depends on:

  • Furniture design
  • How well it was first assembled
  • Condition of the panels
  • Condition of the hardware
  • Any missing fittings
  • Whether it was designed to be taken apart

Not every piece can be safely taken apart and rebuilt — particleboard that has been screwed twice, or glued joints, may not hold. We’ll tell you before we start.

Moving home? Assembly can be part of the process

Assembly and moving are separate services, but we can do both: disassemble before the move, transport the furniture, and reassemble it at the new place.

  1. 01

    Disassemble

Wardrobes, beds, desks, tables and cabinets taken apart carefully, hardware bagged and labelled.

  2. 02

    Move

Panels and items transported to the new home or office.

  3. 03

    Reassemble

Put back together, aligned and anchored where needed in the new rooms.

Furniture assembly for offices & commercial spaces

Fitting out an office, clinic or shop means many units built the same way, in an order that keeps the space usable.

  • Office desks
  • Workstations
  • Chairs
  • Storage cabinets
  • Shelving
  • Reception furniture
  • Meeting tables
  • Retail fixtures
  • Multiple identical units built consistently
  • Layout and workspace planning
  • A sensible order of installation
  • Access and lift booking
  • Packaging cleared as we go

What your furniture is made of matters

Material affects handling, weight, how fasteners hold, and how easily it gets damaged.

  • MDF

Smooth and stable, but edges chip and holes strip if overtightened.

  • Particleboard

Common in flat-pack; doesn't like being re-screwed or getting wet.

  • Plywood

    Strong and holds screws well.

  • Solid wood

    Heavy; joints need careful alignment.

  • Metal

Frames and legs — tightening must be even to avoid wobble.

  • Glass

Doors, shelves and tops need careful handling.

  • Laminated panels

    Surfaces scratch easily during handling.

Furniture with glass or fragile parts

  • Glass doors
  • Mirrors
  • Glass shelves
  • Glass table tops
  • Decorative panels

These take extra care in unpacking, handling and fitting, and are usually fitted last — let us know they’re included when you book.
